MANUSCRIPT ASSESSMENT

Do you need an impartial reader who will tell you the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth about your writing? I offer professional feedback and advice on your book, whether it is in early draft stage or nearing the final cut.

Many writers find a critique of their work is very helpful before they consider the next steps in the process. As an experienced writer and publisher I provide an honest appraisal of your manuscript that may surprise or even disconcert you, but which gives a realistic and resourceful review of the piece. I give your writing a health-check that discusses how to constructively resolve any issues, via a detailed written report.

The Assessment looks at some or all of the following points (depending on genre):

  • Beginnings and endings

  • Structure and reader navigation

  • Plot construction and the narrative arc

  • Development of key themes

  • The Three Cs: Clarity, Coherence, Continuity

  • Characterisation

  • Style issues

  • Manuscript presentation and design implications

  • Any necessary revisions

  • Next steps

It will also answer the following questions:

  • Is the piece suitable for publication? If not, why not?

  • Does it need a substantive edit, copy edit or proofread?

  • How could it be improved?

  • What are the publishing options?

The fee for this service is £15 per 1000 words, and is based on the word count of your manuscript, so if your manuscript is 58,000 words in length, the fee payable will be £870.

All fees are charged at 50% in advance and 50% on completion.

Please send me a brief synopsis of your manuscript, the current word count, and your contact details via the button below and I will get back to you in due course with a quotation and next steps.

Please note that I do not assess manuscripts in the following genres: horror, warfare, dystopian or violent fiction, children's or teenage fiction.
